TT Impressions, Modifications and Chip & Spring Installation

When I first saw an Audi TT, I was not too sure what it was.  I knew I had seen one in a magazine, years before from the show car circuit, but could not put my finger on it.  I then saw another one...and another.  This all took place over a three-day period at the beginning of October 1999 along I91 in CT.  On the second car, I saw the distinctive 4 rings on the rear deck.  The Silver car had to be driven by me.  I was hooked!

I went to an Audi dealer on Long Island where I live because I didn't know where there was one in CT, and was heading home anyway for the weekend.  Once there, I got to see and sit in a Silver TTQ--I was in heaven!  I asked if I could take a test drive but was told that the car was sold and they don't give test drives!  I was crushed!  I made it my goal to drive a TT before the day was out, so I called every Audi dealer on Long Island.

I made my way back towards where I live because I found a dealer only 15 minutes from my house!  I could not believe it, I never knew there was one so close.  I got to the dealer and they had 2 TTQs out front--one Raven Black and one Silver.  I talked to the salesman for a few minutes and eventually I asked if I could take it for a drive.  He said "sure!"  I was finally able to drive my dream car on a beautiful sunny day in October.  I started the car after some small chitchat with the salesman.  I asked him if they have a policy about rpm limits or speed limits.  He said, "no . . . have fun with it."

Well, you don't have to tell me twice!  I got used to the clutch leaving the parking lot and when I got onto the road I opened it up.  I shifted each gear at around 4500-5000 rpms.  I was to 90 mph in no time. This was still 4th gear!  I was sold.  I then decided to see how the car handled and took it around a neighborhood that I was semi-familiar with.  The car really hung the road very well.  I had never driven a Quattro before, and was quite surprised at how nimble the handling was.  I had raced modified GTIs for a few years, and also owned a Datsun 510 GT4 race car and this car out-handled them all!  I had a grin from ear-to-ear by the time we got back to the dealership.  I thanked the salesman and told him to call me when he got a Brilliant Black/Ebony leather combo with the Performance package.  I didn't care about anything else being on the car, except of course the car had to be Quattro!  I ended up getting my car at a dealer in CT, which is a story unto itself and will be saved for another time.
